Carmelite EventsCome Celebrate Taizé Prayer and Liturgy of the Hours
New Formation Book Starting In April 2024:Next MeetingOur next monthly meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. The meeting will begin at 7 PM (in the Byron Room) at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Gaithersburg, MD. We will discuss Chapter 1 and the Prologue of Into Your Hands Father by Wilfrid Stinissen. A virtual link will be available for those who cannot attend in person. All are welcome!
In the spiritual life, we need a central idea: something so basic and comprehensive that it encompasses everything else. According to Carmelite Father Wilfrid Stinissen, surrender to God, abandonment to the One who loves us completely, is that central reality. The life of Jesus shows us the centrality of abandonment, for it is truly the beginning and the end of his mission on earth.
In this simple but profound book, Father Stinissen distinguishes three degrees or stages in abandonment. The first stage consists of accepting and assenting to God's will as it manifests itself in all circumstances of life. The second is actively doing God's will at every moment of one's life. In the third stage, abandonment to God is so complete that one has become a tool in God's hands. At this stage it is no longer I who do God's will, but God who accomplishes his will through me. Thank you Fr. Nepi

“If Carmel has anything to say to a contemporary world, it is about prayer.”

The Flower of Carmel Lay Carmelite Community was formally chartered, by the Carmelite Provincial Offices of the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary in Darien IL, at St. Rose of Lima parish in Gaithersburg, MD in December 2013. This had followed a two year period of exploring Carmelite spirituality before applying to become a Lay Community. Carmelite spirituality helps each of us to become contemplative and aware of God's presence in each moment of our lives.
What is a Lay (Third Order) Carmelite? (more)
Who are the Third Order Lay Carmelites?
Many people are not familiar with the Carmelites' Third Order. The call to Carmel is a vocation, from friars and monks, religious sisters and cloistered nuns, to lay people who want to follow the path of Carmel. Third Order Lay Carmelites are neither a prayer nor a social group. It is a vocation.
It is a call to learn and live a way of life that is dedicated to prayer, community and ministry. All Carmelites seek to live in allegiance to Jesus Christ.
Lay Carmelites are men and women who have heard and answered the call of God to live their Baptismal promises more deeply.
Carmel's spirituality is but one path to God. Our path is not for everyone. But for those who are called to this way of life, it becomes a comfort, guide and beautiful source of spiritual strength.

"Before a Picture of Jesus in my Cell" written by St. Titus Brandsma at Scheveningen prison before being sent to the death camp
A new awareness of thy love encompasses my heart
Sweet Jesus, I and Thee and Thou in me shall never part
No grief shall fall my way but I shall see thy grief-filled eyes
The only way that Thou once walked Has made me sorrow-wise
All trouble is a white-lit joy
That lights my darkest day
Thy love has turned the brightest light
This night-like way
If I have Thee alone
The hours will bless
With still, cold hands of love
My utter loneliness
Stay with me, Jesus only stay
I shall not fear
If reaching out my hand
I feel thee near
A new awareness of thy love encompasses my heart
Sweet Jesus, I and Thee and Thou in me shall never part
No grief shall fall my way but I shall see thy grief-filled eyes
The only way that Thou once walked Has made me sorrow-wise
All trouble is a white-lit joy
That lights my darkest day
Thy love has turned the brightest light

If I have Thee alone
The hours will bless
With still, cold hands of love
My utter loneliness
Stay with me, Jesus only stay
I shall not fear
If reaching out my hand
I feel thee near
